Tape casting of Al/sub 2/O/sub 3//ZrO/sub 2/ laminated composites

Fracture toughness of ZrO/sub 2/ toughened alumina could be increased by macroscopic interfaces. Such as those existing in laminated composites. In this work, tape casting was used to produce A/A or A/B laminates, where A and B can be Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/, AL/sub 2/O/sub 3//5 vol% ZrO/sub 2/, and Al/sub 2/O/sub 3//10 vol% ZrO/sub 2/. An increase in toughness is observed, even in the Al/sub 2/O/sub 3//Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ laminates.
