Large, live line rehab project requires detailed planning

Conducting a massive selective coating refurbishment program on 373 mi of a live, high-pressure natural gas pipe lines in South Australia required extensive planning and organization. The selective refurbishment project was initiated after significant coating failure was identified and five pipe line failures due to stress corrosion cracking had occurred. Problems were somewhat exacerbated by pipe lines being buried in some of the most corrosive soils in existence. Since few of the lines had been looped, it was decided to repair the lines, where possible, live and operating at normal 1,250 psi. Only concession was shut down of lines with a SCC history. The project was considered the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere, requiring six years to complete. Part 1 of the series included an introduction of the problem and an in-depth discussion of the organization and administration of the refurbishment contract. Part 2 is a discussion on the techniques used to refurbish the gas lines, including site clearing and grading, trench excavation, existing coating removal, coating repair and backfill.
