SF/sub 6/ unscrambles ''spaghetti junction''
Ontario Hydro is constructing several gas-insulated substations (GIS) to reduce the land requirements and untangle its switchgear lines. The land needed for gas-insulated switchgear and bus duct is expected to be about 40 acres compared to 200 acres for conventional substations. Ontario Hydro has also designed complicated line arrangements with up to three layers of bus duct and an unconventional building to enclose the switchgear and protect it from extreme weather conditions. The sodium hexafluoride (SF/sub 6/) seals are a particular point of concern for the utility, which will operate its test at near full rather than the customary 75 percent of rated withstand voltage. Other design changes include new surge arrestor connections. Several suppliers are providing components for the first stations. Construction of more stations will depend on whether the GIS equipment maintains system flexibility.
