This paper discusses the Autoventing Turbine (AVT) which appears to be a promising method for improving concentrations of dissolved oxygen (DO) for many streams where hydropower releases adversely affect water quality conditions. The concept of an AVT involves aspiration of air into the water as it passes through the turbine whenever concentrations of dissolved oxygen are less than desired. An applied research project is being conducted to develop experimental and numerical methods to allow for reliable design and deployment of this new generation of hydroturbine.
