Important advances in the generation and use of bio-energy are now being made at an impressive rate. This book provides technical information in quantitative terms, stressing accomplished work instead of statements of scope or programs. Included are summaries of research programs on: biomass resources (wood, plants, plant fluids, aquatic plants, photosynthesis, and hydrogen formation); microbial conversions (ethanol, biogas, and chemicals production); thermal conversions (combustion, gasification, liquefaction, and carbonization); fuel tests (alcohols, plant oils, and other biofuels); and related studies (availability, environmental, sociological, and economic impacts, training in developing countries, research on by-products, unusual sources and uses, and integration of bio-energy system). In addition eight essays review synfuels, US forest resource availability, short rotation culture of hardwoods, technology and economics of fermentation alcohol, ethanol from cellulose, microbial fundamentals of anaerobic digestion, gasifiers, and processing of biomass for gasification. 1800 references, 57 figures, 37 tables.
