Transportation Energy Data Book: Edition 7

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7065789
This document is the seventh edition of the Transportation Energy Data Book, a statistical compendium compiled and published by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) under contract with the Office of Vehicle and Engine Research and Development in the Department of Energy (DOE). The data book was designed for use as a desk-top reference, presenting statistics that characterize transportation activity and data on other factors that affect transportation energy use. The publication displays relevant statistical data in the form of tables and graphs. Each of the major transportation modes (highway, air, water, rail, and pipeline) is treated in separate chapters or sections. Aggregate energy use and energy supply data for all modes are presented in Chapter 1. The highway mode, which accounted for 73.3% of total transportation energy use in 1981, is dealt with in Chapter 2. Topics covered in this chapter include vehicle stock characteristics, fuel efficiency, fleet automobiles, buses, and trucks. Chapter 3 presents data on each of the nonhighway modes: air, water, pipeline, and rail, respectively. Chapter 4 profiles the motor vehicle industry with historical trends in vehicle and engine characteristics. Economic indicators related to the industry are also presented.
