Analysis of power-transformer failures at Georgia Power Co has been substantially speeded through the use of microprocessor-controlled chromatographic tests of the gaseous byproducts contained in the transformers' insulating oils. In addition to providing a quick method of fault-source identification, the tests, when conducted on a scheduled basis while the transformers are in service, point up impending trouble before major equipment damage occurs, to gain significant savings in dollars and outage time. The recent malfunctioning and diagnosis of a 250-MVA (238/115-kV) autotransformer at the utility's North Fork substation are followed.
