Technological review of boiler systems for firing of wet bark and wood waste

The designs described include cyclone furnaces and various forms of the sloping/reciprocating grate. Methods for feeding bark and wood to the boiler are discussed, as well as the predrying of wet wood. Firing of wet wood fuel can be economically feasible without predrying, but predrying the wood outside the boiler with the boiler's own flue gases may result in marginal improvement of the combustion efficiency. However, it is doubtful that a modern boiler plant using a sloping/reciprocating grate can offset the increased capital and operational costs of the drying equipment. Savings may be possible by using other available external heat sources (e.g. waste heat gases or external steam). The economics of the project depends on many factors, e.g. plant size, type of process, the price structure of fuel and power and fuel availability.
