With the use of a high-efficiency spectrometer the absolute yields of neutrons from the /sup 252/Cf nucleus have been measured in the energy range from 2 to 18 MeV at angles 0 and 90/sup 0/ with respect to the fission axis. The anisotropy and the shape of the neutron spectrum are compared with calculations in the framework of statistical models. In the spectrum measured in the plane perpendicular to the fission axis, in the range above 4 MeV, a substantially lower probability of neutron emission is observed in comparison with the previously published data. All the measured neutron distributions are reproduced in the calculations in which neutrons were assumed to be evaporated from the fully accelerated fragments. The upper limit for the contribution of scission neutrons was estimated as 5%.
