This patent describes an apparatus suitable for conducting fluid through a conduit therein from a first to a second port and including means for producing a fluid passage through a wall of the apparatus to communicate the conduit with the exterior of the apparatus intermediate ports, comprising: a hollow body having a first section including the first port and a second section including the second port; a valved fluid passage between the interior and the exterior of the hollow body through a wall of the hollow body intermediate the first and second ports; and means for engaging a surface of an object exterior of the hollow body for temporarily preventing movement of the first section in one direction along the longitudinal axis of the hollow body. A method is described for opening an initially closed fluid communication passage through the sidewall of a device between the exterior of the device and a conduit suitable for conducting fluid from a first to a second end of the device. The device has first and second longitudinally movable sections and comprises: extending engaging means outwardly from the device for temporarily preventing movement in one direction of the first section along the longitudinal axis of the device by engaging a surface of an object exterior of the device; moving in the direction the second section of the device along the longitudinal axis until the passage is opened; and retracting the engaging means at least partially into the opened passage to permit movement of the device.
