A theory is derived for resistive internal kink modes in a tokamak with a high-..beta.. plasma. An equation is derived for the Fourier transform for the perturbed displacement in a resistive layer by a single-fluid approach. Effects of fourth order in the plasma pressure are taken into account. This equation has the same structure as the corresponding equation for resistive ballooning modes. It has an exact solution expressed in terms of a confluent hypergeometric function. A general dispersion relation is derived for resistive kink modes with these effects. The finite plasma pressure leads to a decrease in the growth rates for the reconnection and tearing modes.
