Chemical reactivity of supported gold--4. Reduction of NO by H/sub 2/

Wide-angle X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy studies of 0.2-7Vertical Bar3< gold on alumina, silica, and magnesium oxide and kinetic studies of the reaction of nitric oxide with hydrogen to form molecular nitrogen or ammonia and of hydrogen-deuterium exchange over these catalysts showed that the selectivity for nitrogen depended on the electron density at the surface gold site and that the support affected the selectivity significantly. An increase in electron density at the gold site increased electron back-donation from metal to adsorbed nitric oxide; this weakened the N-O bond and facilitated the formation of nitrogen. The nitrogen selectivity increased in the order: silica Vertical Bar3; magnesium oxide Vertical Bar3; alumina.
