Properties of SiC whisker-reinforced oxide matrix composites

Conference ·
OSTI ID:7061515
Development of SiC whisker-reinforced alumina and mullite composites is discussed. Improved mechanical properties are observed for the composites as compared for the monolithic materials. Near-net-shape fabrication by pressureless sintering is limited by the SiC whisker content and the practical limit to achieve high densities is about 20 vol%. Limited bonding at the matrix-whisker interface is necessary for high toughness composites. The surface chemistry of the whiskers has been found to be an important parameter in determining that bond strength. 15 refs., 3 figs.
