Such frequently discussed financial characteristics of utility companies as allowances for funds used during construction, the regulatory climates in which they operate, historic earnings growth rates, and dividend pay-out policies and the impact of these items on the equity return requirements of utilities are identified and analyzed. The authors describe a method they have developed for detecting and measuring the criteria that investors use for selecting among utility stocks, thus making it possible to relate market values and return requirements.
