It has been established that NaX, NaY, KY, RbY, CsY zeolites, and Na mordenite, which have the properties of solid bases, are capable of catalyzing the liquid-phase hydration of 4-cyanopyridine to isonicotinamide. No activity in this reaction is exhibited by HNaY, H-TsVM (high-silica zeolite), amorphous aluminosilicate, or the zeolitic catalyst Tseokar-2, all of which are solid acids. Kinetic relationships have been studied in the hydration of 4-cyanopyridine in the presence of Na mordenite. It has been found that the reaction is first-order with respect to nitrile. The activation energy if 47.8 kJ/mole.
