The purpose of the present work was to study the kinetics of osmium deposition during decomposition of OsCl/sub 6//sup 2 -/ at the interface between aqueous K/sub 2/OsCl/sub 6/ solution and the surface of Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/.nH/sub 2/O under the various conditions specified below. The behavior of this complex in solutions is somewhat peculiar; for example, aquation of OsCl/sub 6//sup 2 -/ is very slow, ligand exchange is slight, and yet the complex decomposes fairly easily in solution under the influence of light, with precipitation of the hydroxide OsO/sub 2/.nH/sub 2/O. Although photochemical conversions are characteristic of all complexes of the noble metals, they are especially rapid in the case of osmium. The existence of osmium in several oxidation-reduction states, of almost equal stability (III-V), hinders studies of aquation and other conversions of OsCl/sub 6//sup 2 -/. Therefore study of the above process, which is considerably faster than photochemical conversions, as will be shown below, is of special interest.
