Energy: energy efficiency vs. energy growth

Journal Article · · Environment; (United States)

A combination of both energy efficiency and energy growth is needed for the post-petroleum world. Energy growth must be in the direction of better per capita distribution of energy consumption, however, because the trickle-down effect has historically failed to benefit the poor. Statistics are used to illustrate that world consumption patterns are significantly different in rural areas of developed and developing nations, while urban energy consumption is similar. A transition plan to new forms of energy is applicable to all urban areas and requires only a leveling of consumption rates. The introduction of soft technology is appropriate for rural areas of low density. The author recommends that developed countries consume less oil, use fewer resources for weapons, and concentrate on developing unlimited energy resources.
