Mapping of high-grade Middle Proterozoic metamorphic rocks in the core of the Blue Ridge anticlinorium in northern Virginia, coupled with U-Pb dating of zircon and monazite from granitic orthogneisses, demonstrates three main periods of intrusion and at least three periods of deformation between 1.15 Ga and 1.0 Ga (Grenville orogeny). U-Pb zircon crystallization ages from granites in northern Virginia fall in three groups: Group 1, 1144 Ma; Group 2, 1110 Ma--1127 Ma; and Group 3, 1055 Ma--1070 Ma. D1 deformation produced a strong NW-trending, steeply dipping foliation in the western part of the study area in Group 1 granite. Locally, NW-trending foliation in Group 1 granitic gneiss is intruded by Group 3 metagranite, indicating that D1 is older than Group 3 granite. NW-trending foliation also characterizes one of the oldest Group 2 granites (1118 Ma) and suggests that D1 occurred between 1110 Ma and 1118 Ma (syn-Group 2).
