Solid fuel heating apparatus

Patent ·
OSTI ID:7059298
A solid fuel heating apparatus is described comprising an enclosed firebox having support means to support combustible fuel, a flue to allow egress of by-products of combustion from the firebox, and means to permit placement of fuel within the firebox. The apparatus also comprises a baffle extending partially across the firebox between the support means and the flue to inhibit the direct passage of combustion by-products from the support means to the flue and air supply means to supply air to the interior of the firebox to support combustion therein. The air supply means includes a manifold having a first branch to convey air to a location adjacent the support means with outlet means therein to direct air toward the interior of fuel on the support means, and a second branch connected to the first branch and located at an edge of the baffle means. The second branch has an outlet means to direct air toward the support means, the outlet means and the baffle being configured to induce bodily rotation of the combustion by-products within the firebox during combustion of fuel on the support means.
