Oil recovery by in situ combustion

Patent ·
OSTI ID:7057765
This is a method for igniting a thick stratum over its entire thickness around an ignition well and moving the resulting combustion zone through the stratum toward 1 or more offset wells. The ignition well is tubed to a lower level of the stratum. A packer is set at an intermediate level of the stratum dividing it into an upper and lower level. The upper and lower levels of the stratum are ignited while at least 1 offset well is closed-in. Combustion-supporting gas is passed directly into the combustion zone at the selected level so as to expand the zone through the stratum to the other level by direct drive. Thereafter, a second combustion phase is conducted by passing gas to the annular combustion zone, from the ignition well to an offset well, so as to move the combustion zone, from the ignition well to an offset well, so as to move the combustion zone toward the offset well. Hydrocarbons produced by the second phase combustion are recovered from one of the wells. (10 claims)
