Exploration technology, previously the haunt of the geologist and geophysicist, is expanding into the realm of the petroleum engineer. Sophisticated techniques used for rank wildcatting are now being adapted for reservoir exploitation or optimization. This article discusses some of these applications, in addition to a few recent innovations within the more conventional exploration sector.
