Application of sewage sludge to cropland

Journal Article · · Crops Soils; (United States)
OSTI ID:7055686
Application of sewage sludge to cropland usually benefits agriculture because of the value of sludge as a soil conditioner and as a source of essential plant nutrients. However, heavy metal concentrations in the sludge might be toxic to crops causing harmful effects on animals and humans. The impact of heavy metals in sludges may be limited by using management methods intelligently. The availability of some elements to plants (e.g., iron, aluminum, and manganese) is relatively low, and little uptake by plants occurs. The potential hazards of cadmium, nickel, and zinc in sludges can be limited by maintaining soil pH at or above 6.5.
