Title: Sampling and analytical procedures for the industrial-hygiene characterization of coal gasification and liquefaction pilot plants

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7053991

Industrial-hygiene sampling and analytical procedures adapted to coal conversion facilities are described. These procedures were designed for potentially hazardous substances believed to be present in the coal conversion facilities. Due to cost constraints, not all analytical procedures were carried out at each study site. Instead, the toxic substances have been ranked according to hazard and available sampling and analytical procedures, and a judicious selection was made of substances to be sampled and analyzed. High flow pumps were used for personal monitoring of polynuclear aromatics (PNAs) and for particulate and trace-metal sampling. Sampling equipment used for determining total particulates and trace metals was described. Noise exposure was also examined at this time, as were exposures to excessive heat and radiation. Specifics of the analytical processes used were given for the analysis of aromatic amines in the air, aromatic alcohols in the air, selected hydrocarbon vapors in air, total particulate matter in air, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons in air, airborne toxic gases, airborne trace metals, airborne thiophenes, and airborne mercaptans.
