In-service monitoring of safety system reliability

Systematic methods of monitoring safety system reliability performance have been used by Ontario Hydro since the utility began operating the first Canadian nuclear-electric generation station in 1962. This article describes some aspects of the program currently being used to monitor operational reliability. The basis for system performance targets, the reliability indexes used, and their application to the observed performance of selected systems at Bruce Nuclear Generating Station A are discussed. Specific conclusions drawn from the use of these methods are given.
