This patent describes a method of perforating a formation in a well bore having fluid therein using a perforating gun having a support means attached thereto. It comprises: conveying the perforating gun into the well bore; supporting the perforating gun in the well bore; removing the conveying means from the well bore while the perforating gun remains supported in the well bore adjacent the formation to be perforated; and actuating the perforating gun to perforate the formation. This patent also describes an automatic perforating gun release and support apparatus for supporting the perforating gun in a wall bore and releasing the perforating gun for movement in the well bore after the actuation thereof. It comprises: annular housing means having a bore therethrough; mandrel means slidably received within a portion of the annular housing; slip support means; and explosive charge means.
