Here the authors present data collected by the Akebono satellite with magnetic and particle probes of electron populations observed at the nightside auroral oval. They look at the relationship between field-aligned currents and the properties of electron precipitation. Two distinct electron distributions are observed. The warmer have densities less than 1 cm{sup {minus}3} and energies of 300 eV to 1.7 keV. The cooler distribution is 10 to 80 eV with densities of 2 to 16 cm{sup {minus}3}. The authors discuss the correlation of density and temperature changes with the observed variation in the field-aligned currents.
