The papers contained in this volume were presented at the symposium on Silicon-Based Structural Ceramics, which was part of the PAC RIM Meeting that was held in Honolulu, Hawaii, November 7-10, 1993. THe objective of this symposium was to present current research on a range of different silicon-based materials, primarily silicon carbide and silicon nitride. The chemistry, processing, and mechanical behavior of these materials is similar in many ways, thus it was beneficial to bring current research in these materials together in a single symposium. The thirty papers contained in this volume are categorized by subject into one of four sections: Applications and Synthesis of Silicon Nitride, Processing of Silicon-Based Structural Ceramics, Mechanical Behavior of Silicon-Based Structural Ceramics, Oxidation and Corrosion of Silicon-Based Structural Ceramics.
