Production of Ba/sup +/ in a two-photon radiative collision in crossed Na-Ba beams
We report the observation of a two-step radiative collisional ionization between Na((3p /sup 2/P/sub 3/2/) and Ba(6s/sup 2/ /sup 1/S/sub 0/) in which an optical p photon is absorbed simultaneously with the collision, Na((3p /sup 2/P/sub 3/2/)+Ba(6s/sup 2/ /sup 1/S/sub 0/)+h..omega -->..Ba((6p/sup 2/ /sup 1/S/sub 0/)+Na(3s /sup 2/S/sub 1/2/) and with subsequent photoionization of the excited barium, Ba((6p/sup 2/ /sup 1/S/sub 0/)+h..omega -->..Ba/sup +/+e. We observe peak ion intensity close to the difference frequency between Ba((6p/sup 2/ /sup 1/S/sub 0/) and Na((3p /sup 2/P/sub 3/2/) as well as a quadratic increase of ion intensity with laser power. These results confirm, complement, and extend the interpretation of an earlier observation.
