We report measurements of the rates and hyperfine (HF) dependences of [mu][sup [minus]] capture on [sup 23]Na, and the HF transition rate in Na metal. The measured capture rates are in general agreement with the predictions of the 1[ital s]-0[ital d] shell model. The measured HF dependences of the 1017 and 1823 keV [gamma] rays from [sup 23]Ne yield [ital g][sub [ital p]]/[ital g][sub [ital a]]=7.6[plus minus][sub 2.5][sup 2.1] and [ital g][sub [ital p]]/[ital g][sub [ital a]][le]7.1(1[sigma]), consistent with partial conservation of axial-vector current, but in disagreement with claims of an enhancement of [ital g][sub [ital p]]/[ital g][sub [ital a]] in light nuclei. The measured HF transition rate [Delta][sub [ital h]]=15.5[plus minus]1.1 [mu]s[sup [minus]1] is in agreement with the theory of Auger emission but twice the rate previously obtained in NaF ([ital a][similar to]3[sigma] effect).
