Heavy-quark symmetry and D sub 1 (2420) r arrow D sup *. pi. decay

Heavy-quark symmetry relates the {ital D}-wave amplitude for {ital D}{sub 1}(2420){r arrow}{ital D}{sup *}{pi} to the amplitudes for the decays {ital D}{sub 2}{sup *}(2460){r arrow}{ital D}{sup *}{pi} and {ital D}{sub 2}{sup *}(2460){r arrow}{ital D}{pi}. We discuss the extraction of the {ital S} and {ital D} partial wave amplitudes for {ital D}{sub 1}{r arrow}{ital D}{sup *}{pi} and their significance as tests of the applicability of heavy-quark symmetry for charm quarks.
