NATAS is a US Department of Energy (DOE) program that provides tailored technical and commercialization assistance to users of energy-related appropriate technologies. NATAS helps individuals using conservation and renewable energy products and services and provides business assistance to entrepreneurs and innovators in these fields. NATAS is operated for DOE by the National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT), which has provided information and technical assistance on appropriate technologies for 10 years. Since 1984, NATAS has responded to almost 25,000 inquiries. A database was created to catalog the types of users, their questions and their assistance needs. Described is the evolution of those needs during this period. An analysis of the public's changing needs for assistance is presented in the context of concurrent developments (or lack thereof) of new technologies and methods. The analysis is intended to provide insight about technology transfer and input to interest parties on what appears to need transfer and why.
