Mixed paper: New tricks for an old dog
- Environmental Industry Associations, Washington, DC (United States)
Ten years ago, Boy Scout troops had newspaper drives and less than 500 curbside recycling programs collected newspaper in the US, while grocery store warehouses would bale corrugated boxes. In some office buildings, employees were asked to place white letterhead and copier paper in desktop recycling containers, and computer rooms usually had a big bin to collect computer print-out paper. Today, paper recycling is more complex as more materials have been added to collection programs. Newspaper is collected from the curbside in more than 5,000 communities across the US and office paper recycling programs are common; an increasing number collecting more than white paper. Mixed paper is the grade of the future. But what is mixed'' paper Who wants it How will it be collected and processed: These questions need to be answered before mixed paper recycling can become a reality.
