The role of interfacial defects in effecting the interfacial growth of phases involved in diffusion-driven phase transformations has been analyzed. The interfacial growth or recession of a phase is tied to the climb of interfacial misorientation dislocations for the given phase, with the associated diffusion steps concentrated in the interface. For the diffusion-driven transformation, the interface needs to accomplish three interrelated tasks: (1), achieve the necessary composition change, (2), produced the required structure change, and (3), create/annihilate vacancies at a rate consistent with the arriving diffusion fluxes.
