New phases in the MgF/sub 2/-ScF/sub 3/ system at high pressures

Journal Article · · Inorg. Mater. (Engl. Transl.); (United States)

At normal pressure, phase relations in the system under consideration are described by a diagram of the eutectic type with intermediate phases. Under strong compression, the system components undergo polymorphic transformations leading to formation of dense modifications: rutile-like MgF/sub 2/ converts at p = 19 GPa to a state with the distorted fluorite-type structure, while ScF/sub 3/ (VF/sub 3/-type) converts at 5-10 GPa to phases having the ..beta..-YF/sub 3/ and LaF/sub 3/ structural types. The present article contains information on new stable and metastable states occuring as a result of interaction between MgF/sub 2/ and ScF/sub 3/ at pressures up to 10 GPa.
