This paper reports that a five-fold increase in oil production has been achieved by Callon Petroleum in Louisiana's first horizontal test of the deep marine Wilcox sandstone. International Paper Co. (IPCO) well 6 is now flowing in excess of 500 bopd from a 10,150-ft TVD horizontal lateral drilled in the Lockhart Crossing waterflood unit. Callon estimates that an additional 500,000 bbl of oil trapped against a fault will be recovered from this re-entry and sidetrack of an existing producing well. The well was drilled 1,000 ft horizontally in a partially depleted Lower Wilcox sandstone reservoir using a 9 ppg water based mud. No loss of circulation or other serious problems were experienced.
