This paper reports that City Public Service, the municipal gas utility that serves approximately 290,000 gas customers in San Antonio, Texas, is serious about ensuring the continued safety of its almost 4,000 miles of gas main. The company has been providing the benefits of gas to San Antonians for 133 years, initially with manufactured gas and in 1922 instituting natural gas service. A programmed, systematic effort to locate and repair gas leaks has been instrumental in keeping City Public Service's gas distribution network operating at peak safety and efficiency. The utility operates five two-man company leak detection crews and contracts for two more two-man crews from Heath Consultants Inc., Stoughton, Mass., allowing it to survey its entire system every 4 years. Customer growth and an expanding city makes it likely that a third contractor crew will be added within a few years, according to CPS officials.
