Russia and China sign reactor deal

In Beijing on December 18, Russian President Boris Yeltsin and the president of the People's Republic of China, Yang Shangkun, signed a memorandum of understanding formalizing an agreement by which China will buy two VVER-1000 reactors from Russia. The deal had been in negotiation for several months and calls for a turnkey installation by the Ministry of Atomic Energy of the Russian Federation (Minatom). Negotiations of the details of the arrangement will now take place between the two parties directly involved, China National Nuclear Corporation and Zarubeshatomenergostroy, a Russian industrial concern.
