Strong metal-support interactions. The role of electronic and geometrical factors for real M/TiO/sub 2/ catalysts

Electronic and ionic spectroscopies were used to establish the considerable contribution of the electron metal-support interaction to the SMSI. This interaction occurs between the boundary metal (Rh, Pt) cluster atoms and reduced Ti /SUP st/ cations. Partial shielding of the metal sites due to the mutual diffusion of M and the reduced oxide TiO /SUB x/ was also detected. The role was examined for the geometrical and electronic factors in the variation of the catalytic properties of M/TiO/sub 2/ in the hydrogenolysis of ethane, hydrogenation of benzene, and homomolecular isotopic exchange of oxygen.
