The mechanism for the reduction of aldehydes and ketones to their corresponding alcohols by reagents which donate hydrogen, hydride equivalents, may proceed by either homolytic or heterolytic pathways. It is difficult to differentiate mechanistically between a sequence of reactions proceeding by hydride transfer and one proceeding by electron transfer - hydrogen atom abstraction. A number of mechanistic probes is being used to study the details of these reactions. These include the reduction of a number of ketones: ..cap alpha..-haloketones, ..cap alpha..-cyclopropyl ketones and aryl ketones. The reduction of one type of probe, the ..cap alpha..-haloketone, is discussed. The emphasis of the discussion is on the reactions found to involved radical reactions whose pathways contain an electron transfer process.
