  1. Pennsylvania State Univ., University Park (United States)
Public education on topics that lead to greater acceptance of nuclear energy has been a priority in Pennsylvania State University's nuclear engineering department for over a decade. A university can be involved in public acceptance activities if the emphasis of their programs is on education. This operates from the premise that citizens who are not already opposed to nuclear power are more likely to accept it if they become more informed. This approach has led to a high degree of credibility with the audiences served. Different programs have been developed to serve the various audiences, including the adult public, school teachers, and school-age students. At Penn State, staff members are devoted to public education on issues related to radiation, radioactive waste disposal, and nuclear power. Some of the programs offered are described briefly in this paper. All of them are funded by grants from industry or from government and industry.
