This paper explains the Engineering Document Image Management System being implemented within Southern Company Services (SCS), Inc., a subsidiary of The Southern Company, and discusses productivity gains that have been and will be realized using this systems. Over the past several years, SCS and its engineering organization have experienced a number of significant changes. SCS Engineering has completely reorganized and reduced its management staff by about one-third. These changes were prompted to create and maintain a competitive Engineering Organization for The Southern Company through the end of the century. Appropriate use of advanced automation technology will help SCS Engineering to remain competitive and successful enabling us to do what we do better, faster, and more accurately. The application of electronic image management techniques to previously labor-intensive tasks associated with hardcopy engineering drawings and documentation has proven to be productive.
