Extensive investigations have been made of the effects of particle size distribution of coals and type of additives on the slurryability of coals. Nevertheless, influence of parent coal factor has not yet had enough attention among the investigators of coal-water slurry (CWS). On account of the complexity of the word ''coal nature,'' which includes ash content, inherent water, degree of oxidation, accompanying minerals, etc., two physico-chemical parameters - wettability and adsorpability - have been studied in order to find out a useful and easy access method to predict the slurryability of coals. Because coal-water slurry is a suspension of coal, which is often referred to as having a hydrophobic surface in water, it seems important to increase the hydrophilic property, i.e., lower the interface energy of coal in water for a highly stable CWS. Therefore, it is of great significance to find out the relationship between wettability and slurryability of coal. Moreover, it was reported that the adsorpability and swelling of coal in water eventually depends on the hydrophilic degree of coal. In view of the uncertainty of measurements of solid wettability, results to a great extent depend on the method used. A device suggested by Bruil et al. was used. It was rather simple and had good repeatability so that the authors could make a semiquantitative comparison.
