Beam emittance dilution by self induced transverse fields (wakefields) is a key problem in linear accelerators, especially in small structures that operate at high frequencies. To minimize the wakefield effects the beam trajectory must be precisely centered within the reference frame of the structures. This paper describes two experimental attempts to align a high energy beam in accelerator structures (S-band and X-band) by detecting and minimizing beam induced dipole modes. In case of the X-band structure the achieved alignment precision has been verified by independent two beam deflection measurements. {copyright} {ital 1999 American Institute of Physics.}
