Method for effectively handling CO/sub 2/-hydrocarbon gas mixture in a miscible CO/sub 2/ flood for oil recovery

Patent ·
OSTI ID:7041342
In a method for the recovery of viscous oil from a subterranean viscous, oil-containing formation penetrated by injection wells and spaced-apart production wells forming a well pattern is described comprising: (a) injecting carbon dioxide into the formation via the injection wells at the miscible displacement pressure to miscibility displace oil through the formation to the production wells and recovering fluids including oil and gas containing hydrocarbons from the formation via production wells; (b) separating the gas containing hydrocarbon from the oil and analyzing the gas to determine the concentration of carbon dioxide; (c) recovering the produced gas containing the maximum CO/sub 2/ content tolerable in a fuel gas; (d) continuing steps (a), (b) and (c) until the produced gas contains from more than the maximum CO/sub 2/ content tolerable in a fuel gas up to about 70 volume percent CO/sub 2/ and reinjecting the gas into a small portion of the well pattern volume via a predetermined number of injection wells; (e) continuing steps (a), (b), (c) and (d) until the produced gas contains more than 70 volume percent CO/sub 2/ and reinjecting the gas into a larger portion of the well pattern volume via a predetermined number of injection wells; and (f) continuing steps (a), (b), (c), (d) and (e) until the amount of oil recovered from the formation is unfavorable.
