Separating oil phase from aqueous phase using an apertured oleophilic sieve in contact with an apertured cylindrical cage wall

Patent ·
OSTI ID:7041014
A method for the continuous separation and removal of a viscous oil phase from a viscous oil phase-aqueous phase mixture is described which comprises: (a) providing a continuous separation and recovery system consisting of a rotating conveyor in the form of an apertured oleophilic endless sieve having upper and lower surfaces; (b) continuously introducing a mixture including at least an aqueous phase and a viscous oil phase into the rotating cage and tumbling the mixture within the cage; (c) continuously transferring the aqueous phase-viscous oil phase mixture containing the enlarged viscous oil phase particles through the apertures in the cylindrical sidewall onto the oleophilic sieve across the width thereof causing the enlarged viscous oil phase particles to contact and adhere to the sieve surfaces and the aqueous phase to pass through the sieve apertures for subsequent removal; and (d) rotating the sieve containing the adhered viscous oil phase away from contact with the rotating cage and out of the separation zone into the recovery zone where the adhered viscous oil phase is recovered from the oleophilic sieve which is then rotated back to the separation zone and into contact with the rotating cage for further viscous oil phase separation.
