This volume contains papers presented at Symposium A of the 1991 MRS Fall Meeting, Phase Formation and Modification by Beam-Solid Interactions, which was held December 2-6, 1991 in Boston, Massachusetts. The symposium was devoted to studies of the modification and transformation of phases in a wide variety materials: semiconductors, metals, ceramics, fullerenes, and superconductors. The work presented used a number of different types of energetic beams: lasers, ions, electrons, clusters and neutral particles. It was the fourteenth in a series of MRS symposia which have evolved from the original symposium on Laser Annealing. The symposium was very well attended tan the number of papers presented was the largest in the MRS history of symposia on beam-solid interactions. The symposium consisted of 16 sessions (12 oral and 4 poster) over 4-1/2 days, and included 3 joint sessions with the Symposium on photons and Low Energy Particles in Surface Processing, and 2 joint sessions with the Symposium on High-Temperature Superconductors: Materials Research for Emerging Technologies. The symposium began with a session on amorphous semiconductors, followed by topics covering semiconductors, silicon on insulators, phase transformations in metals, ceramics and glasses, beam-induced formation of carbonaceous phases, ion beam deposition, ion plasma and laser depositions, and beam effects on flux pinning in high T{sub c} superconductors.
