Oil Shale Program: Quarterly reports, April 1985-September 1985

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7039883
The topics in this quarterly primarily deal with the area of rock fragmentation and rock motion. The rock fragmentation review panel meeting held in May 1985 is summarized. The experimental plans for future field experiments in oil shale fragmentation are discussed in detail. This includes outlining the sequence of experiments that are necessary to confirm the predictive capability for oil shale fragmentation. It also involves a progression from single blastwell tests through confined volume multi-blastwell tests. As part of the overall experimental effort, work conducted during this period to improve our ability to measure explosive gas pressure is discussed. A series of studies that use the DAMAGE model in the code DYNA2D were conducted during this quarterly period to improve our understanding of the validity and sensitivity of our approach to calculating fracture. One study focused on the sensitivity of predicted fracture to the various mechanical properties of the rock. The most significant sensitivity observed was that of total predicted volume of fractured rock to Poisson's ratio. This highlights the need to accurately know this particular rock property before making predictions. The study also closely examined what has appeared to be anomalous regions of predicted unfractured rock near the explosive borehole. Finally, this report discusses the continued development of the CAROM model, particularly the relationship between the coefficient of restitution and the number of fragments in a computational element. This also explains differences observed in depth-of-pull in experimental cratering shots where the only difference is fragment size. 19 refs., 32 figs.
