Title: Assessment of electric motor technology: Present status, future trends, and R D needs

The purpose of this study program is to contribute to the EPRI Customer Systems Division process on the direction and effort to take in the area of electric motors and drives. This study reviews the operating principles and characteristics of existing electric motors, and details their utilization in the six major user sectors: residential, commercial, industrial, transportation, utility, and military. Needs for improved motor operation are listed by motor type, and needs for improved motor utilization are listed by application within the major user sectors. Views of participants at a recent EPRI R D planning forum on advanced motors and drives are summarized. Programs to address education in the areas of motors and motor usage, and programs to address tile R D needs of specific motor types are recommended.
