Standardization for the spill-control industry

Journal Article · · ASTM Stand. News; (United States)
OSTI ID:7038223
Efforts to standardize pollution control technology for oil spills began nearly a decade ago because of the frustrations of trying to use mismatched booms and connectors during emergencies. The problem became acute with the 1978 Amoco Cadiz accident off the coast of France. Current work on oil spill prevention and control focuses on guidelines for using dispersants, standardized connectors, boom and skimmer testing, and disposal guidelines. Other projects focus on fire-fighting techniques. Recognizing that spills will occur despite prevention procedures and that standardization can inhibit innovation, the public has benefited from the dialogue that has developed around the spill control industry.
