Synthesis rates of inositol phospholipids in carbamoylcholine-stimulated canine trachealis muscle

The authors have been able to measure the movement of (/sup 3/H)-myoinositol from the cytoplasmic pool into inositol phospholipids and inositol phosphates in muscle strips labeled at rest (30 min). External label was removed and contraction was initiated by addition of carbamoylcholine (CC), 5.5 ..mu..M. At 0 min, control levels of PI, PIP and PIP/sub 2/ were respectively: 706, 1560 and 503 dpm/nmole. Myo-inositol specific activity was constant +/- CC and independent of time. The apparent rate of PI synthesis was 0.025 nmoles myo-inositol incorporated/nmole PI-min. The authors conclude that a high proportion of PI may be linked to PIP and PIP/sub 2/ turnover, since the rates and levels of increases in specific activities are similar.
